- Vikramaditya became the king of Malwa in B.C. 57. He was noted for his perfect justice. His name became synonymous with it.
2. In course of time his palace with his judgement seat at Ujjain was in ruins. People forgot it. It was covered with grass and dust and also trees. Shepherd boys took their cows out there to graze. They got plenty of time for fun. There was a green mound in the middle which looked like a Judegment Seat.
3. A cowherd boy seated himself on it and asked others to bring cases before him. Other boys joined the fun. They made up a quarrel and both the parties appeared before the judge. They stated the case, a dispute about a field’s ownership. The boys were amazed at the wonderful gravity and deep. wisdom with which he delivered the judgement, as if he was possessed.
4. It was a mysterious experience. They began to refer actual cases to him, with the same result. The news caught the imagination of the people. Grown-up men and women began to bring their lawsuits to be decided there. The cases were settled to the full satisfaction of both the parties.
5. The news reached the king, who now lived far away from Ujjain. He had the Judgement-Seat dug up. It was a slab of black marble supported by twenty-five stone angels. It was brought to the palace and placed prominently in the hall of justice. The king asked the people to observe three days of fasting and prayer. The king was to ascend the new throne on the fourth day. As he was about to do so a stone angel prevented him by asking him whether he had never desired to rule over other kingdoms. The king recalled his tyrannical past. He had to admit he was not worthy. The angel asked him to fast and pray another three days so as to purify his heart. And the angel flew away. The king did it. He tried to sit on the Judgement-Seat again on the fourth day, with the same result. Another angel asked him if he had never coveted the riches of others. He knew he had. The angel commanded him to fast and pray yet another three days and flew away. This took place again and again and only one angel remained who asked him if his heart was pure as that of a child. The king knew it was not. The last angel flew away with the marble slab.
6. But the king now knew that only he who was pure of heart could be perfectly just, like the innocent shepherd boy.

2. समय के साथ उज्जैन स्थित उनका राजमहल और उनका न्यायासन खंडहर हो गया। लोग उसे भूल गये। वह घास, धूल व पेड़-पौधों से ढक गया। गड़रिये बालक वहाँ अपनी गायें चराने लगे। उनके पास खेल-खिलवाड़ के लिए ढेर सारा समय था। उस जगह मध्य में एक हरा टीला-सा था जो न्यायासन-सा प्रतीत होता था।
3. एक गड़रिया बालक उस पर बैठा और उसने दूसरों से कहा कि उसके समक्ष विवाद प्रस्तुत करें। अन्य गड़रिये बालकों ने इस खेल में उसका साथ दिया। एक बाद गढ़ा गया और दोनों पक्ष ‘व्यायाधीश’ के सामने प्रस्तुत हुए। बाद एक खेत की मालिकी को लेकर था। वादी प्रतिवादी ‘न्यायाधीश’ की आश्चर्यजनक गम्भीरता और गहन ज्ञान के साथ दिये न्याय से चकित थे, जैसे उसमें न्याय की आत्मा प्रविष्ट हो गई हो।
4. वह एक विस्मयकारी या रहस्यमय अनुभव था। अब गड़रिये बालक वास्तविक वाद प्रस्तुत करने लगे और वही नतीजा हुआ यह खबर लोगों में फैल गई। अब वयस्क नर-नारी अपने वाद लेकर निर्णय के लिए गड़रिये ‘न्यायाधीश’ के समक्ष आने लगे। हर विवाद इस तरह सुलझाया गया कि दोनों पक्ष उसके न्याय से पूर्ण सन्तुष्ट थे।
5. यह खबर राजा के कान में पड़ी जो अब उज्जैन से दूर रहता था। उसने न्यायासन को खुदवाया खुदाई में एक काले संगमरमर की शिला निकली जिसे पच्चीस पत्थर के देवदूत सहारा दिये हुए थे। इस आसन को राजप्रासाद लाया गया और उसे न्याय कक्ष में प्रमुख स्थान पर रखा गया। राजा ने राज्य भर में तीन दिन का उपवास रखने व प्रार्थना करने का आग्रह किया। चौथे दिन राजा न्यायासन पर बैठने वाला था। जब वह ऐसा करने जा रहा था, एक पाषाण के देवदूत ने उससे पूछा कि क्या उसे अन्य राज्यों पर राज करने की तृष्णा नहीं रही ? राजा को उसके नृशंस भूतकाल का स्मरण हो आया। उसे मानना पड़ा कि वह योग्य नहीं है। देवदूत ने उसे तीन दिन
और उपवास रखने व प्रार्थना करने को कहा ताकि उसके हृदय का शुद्धिकरण हो सके और देवदूत उड़ गया। राजा ने उसका कहा माना, उसने चौथे दिन फिर न्यायासन ग्रहण करने की कोशिश की, पर फिर वही हुआ। दूसरे देवदूत ने उससे प्रश्न किया कि क्या वह कभी दूसरों का धन देखकर नहीं ललचाया ? राजा जानता था कि वह ललचाया था। देवदूत ने उसे आदेश दिया कि तीन दिन और उपवास रखा जाये व र्थना की जाये और वह उड़ । यह बार-बार घटी और अब केवल एक देवदूत ही शेष था। उसने राजा से पूछा कि क्या उसका हृदय किसी शिशु की तरह निर्मल है ? राजा जानता था कि ऐसा नहीं है। अन्तिम देवदूत भी उड़ गया और संगमरमर की शिला भी साथ ले गया।
6. परन्तु अब राजा की समझ में आ गया था कि केवल वही पूर्णतः व्यायप्रिय हो सकता है जो हृदय से निर्मल हो जैसा कि वह भोला-भाला गड़रिया बालक था।
